MD SHA TOD Construction Inspector (TET III / IV), District 3

Brudis & Associates, Inc. is seeking Construction Inspectors to work on MDOT SHA Traffic Control Device projects in Montgomery County, Maryland. This is an excellent opportunity for those with electrical and communications experience to move in a new direction!

Summary:

The Construction Inspector will work on Maryland State Highway Administration's Traffic Control Device projects and will perform technical inspection of traffic control device (TCD) construction such as signal, signing, lighting and intelligent transportation systems (ITS) devices for the Office of Traffic and Safety, Traffic Operations Division (OOTS-TOD). Assigned work may involve OOTS administered projects, District projects, Access Permits, and other related work statewide. Responsibilities include identifying and resolving problems impacting construction projects, completing all documentation associated with TCD projects, performing quality assurance reviews of work, verifying materials used on projects meet standards and contract documents, and inspecting/reporting on contractor compliance with permits. The inspector will be the first line of contact on all OOTS-administered projects and is responsible for ensuring adherence to the plans, specifications, and standards. Work may often require nighttime and weekend operation, coordinating projects with utility companies, state police, signal technicians, and other MDOT SHA personnel as necessary to ensure on-time project completion.

Required Experience/Skills:

  • Minimum of three (3) years of construction inspection experience on traffic control device and/or highway projects (TET III / IV)
  • Possession of active IMSA & MARTCP Certifications strongly desired
  • Working skill in operating computer equipment, software programs and field inspection equipment
  • Ability to read and interpret project plans and contract specifications
  • Ability to prepare simple drawings, detailed reports and maintain project records
  • Communicate effectively with agency and contractor personnel and the general public

Responsibilities:

  1. Ensuring that all construction contract stipulations are met with emphasis on:
    1. Performing construction stakeout within two weeks of receiving the notice of award
    2. Performing the Erosion and Sediment Control (ESC) meeting prior to earth disturbance
    3. Obtaining/Filing ESC daily reports
    4. Performing payroll compliance checks
    5. Ensuring that material clearance and Buy America requirements are met
    6. Coordinating with the team leader to ensure construction schedules are submitted, accepted, and are updated monthly or as needed
    7. Verifying that lane closure permits are approved prior to starting any work
    8. Ensuring that the temporary maintenance of traffic meets standards and that safe work zone practices are followed
  2. Prepare and submit complete and accurate inspector reports (IDRs) on a daily basis
  3. Tracking and monitoring work performed by contractors and reporting on construction status weekly, per location/intersection.
  4. Enforce MDOT SHA, FHWA, NEC, NESC, standards and specifications
  5. Review design plans to ensure constructability and cohesiveness of contract documents.  Provide recommendations for resolving issues.
