Design Engineer - Structural Engineering Division

Since 1992, BAI has provided comprehensive, innovative and effective solutions to our clients’ transportation, stormwater, and infrastructure needs. 

BAI is actively seeking a Design Engineer for the Structural Division in our Columbia, Maryland office. 

Job Summary:

The design engineer will demonstrate an ability to collaboratively work with a group or independently on a wide-range of small- or large-scale multi-discipline projects for state, county, or local jurisdictions. Design engineers will assist with development of project plans under the guidance of project engineers and project managers. The job requires analytical thinking, adaptive problem solving, creativity, and innovation. Design engineers shall be dependable, open minded, focused, and attentive to details including project schedules, budgets, and design quality. 

Responsibilities and Duties:

Responsibilities include developing plans, specifications and estimates for design services including but not limited to bridge, culvert and noise barrier design, retaining walls, bridge deck repair/replacement, bridge substructure and superstructure rehabilitation/repair, retaining walls, structure ratings, parking structures, structure ratings, inspections, building rehabilitation/repair, etc.  Design Engineers will also participate in bridge inspections in the field and assist in developing bridge inspection reports.   This position is expected to consist of 50% field work.

Knowledge, Skills, and Minimum Requirements: 

  • BSCE in Civil Engineering or appropriate discipline
  • Fundamentals of Engineering Exam (FE/EIT) or equivalent
  • 0-6 years of design experience in appropriate discipline
  • Working knowledge of CADD and Microstation and associated design software
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong computer skills including Microsoft office products and GIS applications
  • Ability to work well within a project team by building relationships and teamwork
  • High-level of integrity, ethics, quality service, and safety
  • Maintain a positive rapport with supervisor and employees
  • Ability to travel to project sites
  • Ability to conduct field work outdoors in varying weather conditions
  • Safety conscious and will be responsible for their personal safety and the safety of their fellow team members
